RTW: Cover Love

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This Week's Topic

What are your all-time favorite book covers?

I do tend to judge a book by its cover—in a good way. Here’s why these eight had me at hello:

OMG Hilarious

Exquisite, beautiful, just GORGEOUS

Subtlety

It Says it ALL

Dark. Mysterious. Intriguing.

How can you not love this one?

There are so many. SO MANY. But these are some recent faves.

How about YOU? What are some of YOUR favorite book covers?

  1. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but in Fantasy, the covers have been pretty standard for a long time. I'm seeing some different styles now, and I'm glad!

  2. I forgot about Imaginary Girls! I love that one. Now I am tempted to edit my post...

  3. Yay I love that you have Karen's cover up there!!! :)

Those are all great choices. I always hate having to pick out my favorite covers because there are so many I love for different reasons. I feel like I'd need a more specific instruction, like pick out your favorite blue covers or something :-P

  4. Oh, I forgot about Looking for Alaska. Beautiful and subtle, you're quite right!
    You matched one of mine!
    Such a fun post! : )

  5. I'm reading Beauty Queens (after reading your funny review of it). I am embarrassed to say that I didn't realize until just the other day that those are lipsticks and not bullets across her chest. Too funny! I'm reading it on my e-reader so I couldnt' really tell until I saw the cover in a bookstore. That just makes me like it more :)

  6. Gatsby! I ignored the classics in my post, but that is one of my favorites, too. I actually have a Catcher in the Rye cover sweatshirt, and a Gatsby t-shirt. :)

  7. Great picks. I love subtlety too, like Boy Meets Boy.

And Shut Out. That does say it all.

    I picked Beauty Queens too.

  8. Great list. The Looking for Alaska cover is the reason why I picked up the book.

  10. I almost included Imaginary Girls too... There's something about the movement, the way her dress billows out, that I absolutely love.

    Great choices!

  11. The Duff, Paranormalcy and Supernaturally all had me yes at the cover. Which in hindsight is awful to admit. I wanted to like the books BEFORE I saw the covers....but the covers sealed the deal.

  12. I think I like the Imaginary Girls and Hourglass covers for the same reason. They're both beautiful and strange at the same time.

Oh, and speaking of The Great Gatsby, I'm in LOVE with this version: http://www.goodreads.com/book/photo/444534.The_Great_Gatsby

  14. I love The Forest of Hands and Teeth. It's so dark and you're right: the cover is compelling. I'm reading Beauty Queens right now, and I have to admit it was the cover that caught my eye at first. I thought it was funny and completely relatable to the subject.

  17. Oooh, I hadn't seen the cover for the Forest of Hands and Teeth before, but I love it. It makes me definitely want to pick it up!

    Love the title, too, though.

  18. I love these, Alison! The HOURGLASS cover gave me chills the first time I saw it. (And the book was amazing!) I'd add the cover for IRON WITCH (beautiful!) and DELIRIUM (sooo cool).

  19. Ohhhh, I love Imaginary Girls (have not read this one, but looks so cool!) and Hourglass (on my TBR list!).

We both have The Forest Of Hands And Teeth on our lists - perfect blend of cover and title for that uber creep factor!

    Great list, Alison!

  23. THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH series has some of my fave covers. So gorgeous.

IMAGINARY GIRLS might win my vote for prettiest cover, though. It made me snatch up the book.

  25. I've noticed a lot of people like the Hourglass cover. I agree with them. And I do love the Looking For Alaska cover too. I'd never heard of that book before, but the cover is calling me now!

  26. I really like these, but am I the only one who is curious why Liv Tyler is on the cover of SHUT OUT when she is like 35 now?
