THE END is Here! (And I'm Celebrating!)

So, here’s my past three weeks…

Yes—you read correctly. Alison FINALLY typed THE END on her WIP. It’s been two years and just as many rewrites, but I finally have a version I love, characters I want to share with the world, and a story that still makes me laugh and cry.

And while I’m still doing some serious happy dancing (writing THE END NEVER gets old), I am ready to jump back in. And I have. Currently I’m attacking a revision notes doc that might just rival the length of my manuscript (kidding—but I seriously typed out five pages of notes to myself just on my boy’s special, um…skill), and then revisions. A few additions. And then lots of this.

I’m a revise-as-I-go kind of girl, so not a terrible amount of grammar or tightening cleaning. My biggest challenge over the next few weeks will be my lowering the word count and the inevitable, painful, heart-wrenching scene-chopping. Wish me luck, folks. There are some scenes I already know have to go that I just don’t want to part with.

BUT I’m ready. Turn on the coffee pot, bring on the Jolly Ranchers. Round one revisions? Let’s GO.

So, that’s the big news in my world. What’s new with YOU?

  1. Congratulations! Such an awesome moment. Sometimes taking several weeks (or even months, gulp) off from your wip allows you to be more objective and more able to kill your darlings. Good luck with the revision!

    1. Thanks, Vicki! Usually I do take at least a month off, but I've already taken "subconscious" breaks with this one - too often. And I'll let my frustration meter be my gauge. When I feel the subconscious needs time to work, I'll take a break.

  2. Yay!!!! So so soooooo happy for you :D Typing those two little words is magical and a MAJOR achievement even if we know revisions and editing need to follow!
Have fun revising! (and totally curious about your MC's special skill now :P)
I started receiving comments from my beta readers and one of them compared the romance in my book to the way Stephanie Perkins writes romance...so yep, that made my DAY, WEEK, probably month, year, decade...:D And I'm excited about the comments I am receiving because some of the things they point out will definitely make my story stronger! :D :D :D

  4. That's awesome news, Alison! Nothing like that period between finishing the draft and editing. Gets me so energized for a story. Think it's really important to build momentum after a long drafting process, and before a loonnnnggg editing process (always, in my case). :)

Best of luck on the edits!

    1. Agreed. I have been taking needed breaks as I go with this draft, and I'm ready to jump in for now (and I have already). The internal block usually determines when I need to let the subconscious take over.

    1. It is a rush. And I really poured it on this past weekend. I've finished once already with this ms, then scrapped it. But I'm pretty sure I'm sticking with this one. :) And yes to revisions! I LOVE that part!

  8. A round of applause for making it to the end. And now comes the real fight: turning your fingers into tear-stained stumps as you obsess over every line and word. That's what happened to me, at least; fortunately I've learned to type with my face. I've gotten pretty good at it, I think.

But joking aside, congratulations. I'd wager it's only a matter of time until you turn your work into a real masterpiece.

    1. Thanks! And I already fret over every word - even on first draft. I just can't seem to turn that inner editor off!

  9. Yay for you! I can remember back when I was a naive writer and believed typing "the end" meant you'd never have to touch it again. {wipes tears of laughter away} But that means we're better writers, now that we know it just means we've entered the revision phase, right? Right?
