What's Up Wednesday (17): The Picture Edition

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up. Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk are the hosts, and we'd love for you to join in the fun! Just hit up their blogs and sign up on the linky. J

What I'm Reading:
This past week I finished these

Both issue books with characters I wanted to reach through the pages and HUG. LEONARD PEACOCK really got me. I mean, I just felt bad for EVERYONE. Anyway, after reading two books that made me cry and now these two books that made me sad, my heart's exhausted. I need something light. And fluffy. Any recommendations?
How about YOU? What are you reading this week?

What I'm Writing:
This week I wanted to work on my WiP's finale and write at least 5000 words. I worked on the finale. I wrote about 8000 words. I am a scene and a half away from the climax. Yes. The CLIMAX. Is it wrong that I'm kind of sad about that? I mean, I know I have a LOT of revising to do, but this story's been so fun to write and a part of me doesn't want it to end. But a bigger part of me wants to finish so I can start revising the heck out of it. Maybe this week.

What are you writing this week?!

What Inspires Me Right Now:

These awesome writer friends who just finished stories they worked so hard on this summer. SO PROUD, guys! And it's inspiring me to push through to THE END of mine.
What Else I've Been Up To:

A lot.

First, I'll try not to be too obnoxious, but MY EAGLES WON MONDAY NIGHT!!!!! Oh, and my favorite football hottie Brent Celek had an awesome touchdown.

*swoon* I love football.

Second, it was my birthday last Friday and I just wanted to thank everyone for all the sweet birthday wishes on Twitter and facebook. I really don't think too much about the birthday, but that was very nice and wonderful and thank you.  J Also, I got carded on my birthday. That made this 43 year old VERY HAPPY.
And for my birthday, I got tickets to see these guys

I took the fourteen year old to see them last night and THEY WERE AMAZING. Adam started the set with my favorite FAVORITE song, "One More Night," and it just got better from there. AWESOME concert!
Oh, and I have an Instagram now. Guys, I am not a picture taker, but the daughter insisted I get one since I now have an iPhone and well, I posted my virgin Instagram pic last night.

Finally, today I am remembering 9/11. I post about it every year so today I shall just link back to one of them (click HERE). It's my plan to not just remember and honor those who lost their lives on September 11, but how to honor them EVERY DAY.

What's up on YOUR Wednesday?!

  1. Have you read THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US by Kasie West? It was a cute contemporary read reminiscent (at times) of Sixteen Candles. Definitely a good book to follow up books that exhaust the heart.

8000 words is awesome! Good for you, Alison. And I'm happy to hear you had such a great birthday. :-)

    1. Thank you for the recommendation! I will have to check it out. :)

And thank you!!! It seems like I have SO MANY words and I'm still not done! But it's okay. I've written longer (way longer!) stories that I just get down in revisions. We'll see!

  2. I was so happy for both Tracey and Liz, as well. Yay for the completion of a draft!! It sounds like you'll have similar news in the coming weeks, so we'll be excited for you when that comes. Have a great week!

  3. So near the finish mark of your story, Alison--I know it's sad, but you're doing awesomely (is that a word? I don't care!) with your word count, so keep up the great progress. Don't let the tears in your eyes slow you down! :)

I hope you have a great writing week--maybe next week you'll be telling us that you finished? :)

    1. hee - I make up my own words ALL THE TIME. :) And then my students would start using them. Oops.

I hope so, Colin. I HOPE I am finished next week!

  4. I'm right with you--on the writing thing. When I was burning through the climax of my last book, I was like, "But it's almost over, and I don't want it to end. Ever." When I sat back after having typed the last line, I refrained from opening up a new document and picking up right where it left off on the next book--because, darn it, I have to edit this thing too, right? If that's the place you're at, wahoo!

    1. I actually think it's a good sign to not want the story to end. And yes - I do have A LOT of editing ahead, but it's okay. I get to spend more time with some of my favorite people!

  5. Happy Birthday!! (in case I missed saying so on Twitter) :) Hope it was as magnificent as it sounds.

Congrats on reaching your MS's climax!! That is so exciting.

    1. I'll have to look you up! And I'm not sure I'll get hooked on the picture TAKING part, but I already spend probably way too much time looking at other photos! :)

And I hope to get lots accomplished too! Thanks!

  7. Of course you would be sad, it's a big thing to get to the end of something you've been working on for so long. Although you do have revisions and edits to look forward to, but they're not the same as writing that first draft.

    1. Agreed - but I have a feeling that when I flesh things out in places, I'll be doing enough "new" writing to satisfy that first draft feel.

      Have a great week!

  8. Have fun writing the climax. All sounds very intense.

That footballer looks like he's performing a ballet move up there. The photographer had excellent timing. He looks so delicate... and I'm sure seconds later was being *terribly* manly and stomping all over the place ;)

    1. Sports photographers amaze me - they capture the most interesting shots and yes - you are right. He does look delicate!

And thanks! I've already written pieces of the climax and made myself lol in the process so...good thing. :)

  9. Hey, happy belated birthday! I haven't been on Twitter much lately, so I missed the chance to wish you a great day before! Looks like you had a blast!

I can totally see why you'd be sad to finish your draft. It's very bittersweet to reach the end of a project you've enjoyed working on and to know the story is complete (minus the revisions and edits, of course). You've made incredible time on your WIP, and an 8k week is so impressive! Good luck with writing the climax! :)

    1. Thank you!!! And yes - I am sad. I am actually more sad about the two week break I am making myself take from it. Which should probably be longer, but I don't think I can stay away from these guys for very long!

  10. Happy birthday! I hope you had a fantastic day!

I hope you get to finish your book this week. It's always kind of bittersweet getting to the end, but that's when the real fun begins! Weird, I used to hate revising, but now I love it. Watching the story get better each time you go through the manuscript is such a great feeling. :)

    1. I do love revising too and just knowing I'll get to spend even more time with this story makes me a little more not so sad about it ending. And yes! It is a great feeling watching it get better!

  11. 8000 words!!!

Let me know if you find a good, light read - I'm wading through the classic, CATCH-22, and I'll need a recovery book afterward.

I live in Redskins country, so you can imagine the sadness that was in my social media streams Monday night and into Tuesday morning.

    1. I think you will need a recovery book after that!

And are you a proud and die-hard Redskin? I don't know if we can be friends. ;) Just kidding! My brother-n-law is a Redskins fan and my father-n-law a Giants fan so game day in the NFC East is always interesting.

      Have a great week!

  12. I am SO inspired by Tracey and Liz too! Somehow, seeing my friends reach THE END makes me think just maybe I can do it too! And you're so close too, Alison! I am rooting you on from the west coast!

I've been wanting to read LEONARD PEACOCK. I don't normally read light books, and the last funny book I read was AUDREY, WAIT! (which I know you've read)... If you end up finding something light (and awesome!) let me know. :-)

I'm loving that photo of you and your girl, by the way... You two look so much alike! Glad you had fun at the concert, and I'm glad you finally have Instagram. I'm obsessed!

    1. You can do it too! And I imagine you have to be close as well. Go Katy!

Leonard Peacock was really good. It will hurt your heart though.

And thanks! We did have SO MUCH FUN. I'm still on a high from it (and singing EVERY Maroon 5 song I know :))

  16. Goooo Alison! Finish that story! Also, happy belated birthday! It sounds like it was fun. Welcome to Instagram too! I'll have to find you. I'm akangaru.

I saw Maroon 5 like 2 years ago for the first time - when they were touring for the Hands All Over album- though I've been fans of them for a long time. I totally agree. They put on a great show! :)

And definitely going to follow you on IG now--I'm obsessed!

  21. Happy Birthday!!!! And nice job on your writing :) And welcome to the world of instagram!!

I know my post is a bit late, (as the Eagles lost this week) but I'm rooting for them too. So post about them all you want haha! I want the Eagles to win, unless they face my favorite team, the Seahawks, in the playoffs.
