What's Up Wednesday (18): The !!!!!!!!! Edition

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up. Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk are the hosts, and we'd love for you to join in the fun! Just hit up their blogs and sign up on the linky. J
What I'm Reading:
This past week I read ON THE ISLAND by Tracey Garvis Graves. Here's the good reads blurb
When thirty-year-old English teacher Anna Emerson is offered a job tutoring T.J. Callahan at his family's summer rental in the Maldives, she accepts without hesitation; a working vacation on a tropical island trumps the library any day.
T.J. Callahan has no desire to leave town, not that anyone asked him. He's almost seventeen and if having cancer wasn't bad enough, now he has to spend his first summer in remission with his family - and a stack of overdue assignments - instead of his friends.

Anna and T.J. are en route to join T.J.'s family in the Maldives when the pilot of their seaplane suffers a fatal heart attack and crash-lands in the Indian Ocean. Adrift in shark-infested waters, their life jackets keep them afloat until they make it to the shore of an uninhabited island. Now Anna and T.J. just want to survive and they must work together to obtain water, food, fire, and shelter.

Their basic needs might be met but as the days turn to weeks, and then months, the castaways encounter plenty of other obstacles, including violent tropical storms, the many dangers lurking in the sea, and the possibility that T.J.'s cancer could return. As T.J. celebrates yet another birthday on the island, Anna begins to wonder if the biggest challenge of all might be living with a boy who is gradually becoming a man.
Guys, this book was INCREDIBLE. It reminded me a lot of the movie Castaway (with Tom Hanks and Wilson), but different. And possibly . . . definitely better.
Currently I'm finishing up a reread of THE RAVEN BOYS so I can start reading this

A week of reading about Gansey. Pure bliss.
How about YOU? What are you reading this week?

What I'm Writing:
I posted this picture on Instagram the other night

Monday I was so close and I knew I was so close so I sat down and wrote 5000 words, banging out the end. It's ROUGH. And messy. And way too long. But the first draft of the blob is done. Now I just have to force myself to stay away from the WiP for a few weeks, giving my subconscious work-time until October 1. And then, I'm in REVISING mode. J

What are you writing this week?!

What Inspires Me Right Now:
Cool mornings. Rainy afternoons. Incredible stories with just as incredible writing. My kids. My husband. Me. My stories. My writer and non-writer friends who are incredibly supportive and encouraging.
Clearly, lots of things. J
What Else I've Been Up To:
This past weekend we had six soccer games. My son played in three; my daughter, two. My husband coached three (doing the math? ;) he coached 2 of my daughter's games). One might think I'd be sick of soccer, but nope! I love it! What made the soccer even better? My daughter scored! It was off a PK, but so what! First score for her in over four years. SO PROUD.
Also, I mowed the lawn last Friday for the first time in well over ten years. WHEW
Finally, this Sunday I'll be participating in this

It will involve a giveaway on my part. Make sure to stop by!
What's up on YOUR Wednesday?!

  4. Oh, I read ON THE ISLAND on vacation last year and I loved it. Did you know there is a companion novella ebook available? I'm saving that for a future vacation read. :)

Congrats again on THE END! :)

    1. Well, I guess I will have to invest in an ereader then! Wow!

And thanks! Such a great feeling to be done the first draft. :)

  5. Congratulations on finishing your first draft!

I've had a relatively calm week so far, since my roommate has revealed herself as irreversibly crazy and gone back to live with her mother while waiting for a new place to live (NOT with me, as she's hoping). She's in for another think if she thinks she can just cavalierly break a lease a few months in, not help with finding a sublet, tour new apartments while still legally bound here, and spread ridiculous, slanderous rumors about meth labs in this development.

And wow! Sounds like you're having a time. Karma should fix that situation. I hope. :)

  6. Congrats on finishing The Blob, and on the soccer game and goal from your daughter. I don't know much about the game, but I do know a goal is good. Love and hugs Joss xxx

  7. So happy for you about the first draft, Alison! That's so inspiring! :D Revisions are kind of fun, so October's going to be awesome for you. A lot of people are talking about rereading THE RAVEN BOYS before THE DREAM THIEVES, and that's tempting me to do the same. Problem is, I know the moment my copy gets here, I'm going to want to dig in. Hmm... Hope you have a great week, Alison! :-)

    1. I knew I had to reread this one. I devoured the first read and I feel like there were things I forgot and let me tell you - there were. And this second read? EVEN BETTER. I can't wait to get my hands on TDT though. I'm kind of glad my copy won't get here until the weekend because it's giving me time to really savor this second read of TRB. :)

And thanks again! I love drafting, but I LOVE revising. It's where "my" craft emerges. I think. :)

  10. Yay for finishing your first draft! I love the feeling that comes with that. I also loved ON THE ISLAND. It's like CASTAWAY without the boring and with some swooning.

    1. Agreed! Definitely more swooning with ON THE ISLAND.

And thanks, Tracey! I'm sure you're still riding THE END high. Congrats again to you too!

  11. Yay on hitting "the end!" It's awesome that you actually type that into your manuscript. I never do. Then again, I've never finished writing an entire series, or I might...except my mind is continually working out how the characters exist AFTER the conclusion, so maybe not. I'm not sure those two words should exist anywhere in a writers lingo. What do you think?

    1. Thank you! And I didn't used to. But I started doing it with the last project I worked on and it just gives me a sense of completion, ya know? I take it out for the final draft, but it's cool to write in there. :)

  12. Congratulations on typing "The End"! That's fantastic. I find it so helpful taking a break from my WiPs. Work forced me to take the summer off from editing, but now I'm back to it, it's going really well and I've fallen in love with the book all over again ^_^

Sounds like an action packed week for you and yours. Hope the next one is just as great!

    1. That's exactly why I'm taking a break. I should REALLY take longer than two weeks, but I'm already itching to revise it. Two weeks will have to do. :)

  15. Wow, have you ever been busy! It amazes me that you managed to finish off your first draft in the middle of all those soccer games! You rock! And congrats to your daughter on scoring a goal!

I really need to check out ON THE ISLAND. This is the second time I've heard someone rave about it. Hope you enjoy THE DREAM THIEVES! I finished up my ARC a few days ago and wanted to start reading it all over again. Have a super week!

    1. Oh, haha - I actually take the weekends off of writing now. So, I wasn't writing during the soccer games, but when I got back to it Monday, I was apparently ready to go! :) And thanks! McKenzie was stoked!

I have a feeling I'll be like that with TDT too. I devoured TRB and now that I'm rereading I'm savoring every beautiful word. So, I have a feeling I'll do the same with TDT. :)

  17. So many soccer games! I was worn out after watching my daughter's ONE game on Saturday! I'm so glad you loved ON THE ISLAND, though I'm not surprised. I thought of you so many times as I read it. :-) Also... THE END! I'm so happy for you, and so motivated by your amazing progress. You wrote a whole book in one summer. That's amazing, Alison! Best of luck as you dive into revisions!

    1. I can't imagine why you thought of me while reading ON THE ISLAND. ;) Like CM, I love how her mc had a very pretty normal name and the guy went by his initials. And then of course the story line. *swoon*

And yay for the END!!! Hopefully I'll be able to send a piece of it to you soon. :)

Banned Books Week is next week? Hmmm... I'll have to check out that blog hop. Thanks for the heads-up!

And yes! I've done the Banned Book hop for three years now. Fun and important! Good stuff!

Again, huge congrats on finishing your draft! That's awesome and very inspiring. Good luck with the revision too.

  25. YAAAAAAAY!!! Congrats on finishing your first draft, Alison!!! That is so, so awesome!!! :)

I just read ONE THE ISLAND a few weeks ago, and it definitely made me think of your story (with the HS guy & the teacher). I thought it was so well done. She really nailed the voice, and I was amazed that a book about two people on an island could be a page-turner! Anyhow, glad you read it and liked it!

I have no idea what PK means, but kudos to your daughter for scoring! And kudos to you for mowing your lawn! Lawn work is absolute least favorite thing EVER, so I am seriously impressed. :)

Hope you're having a great week!
