Here’s how last week went for me…

How I did on last week’s goal

My goals for last week were to

1) Write 5000 words on my Mean Boys story. Check!

2) Work on my beginning of TMC at least three days this week. TRY to have it mostly done and in the hands of readers by the end of July.

I worked on my THOSE MAGIC CHANGES story four days, making progress on my new beginning. BUT I don't think I'm going to have my revised beginning in the hands of readers this week. Here's why...

Friday, I received a Revise and Resubmit from one of the agents who had a full of TMC. She had a lot of really nice things to say, many of her revision suggestions resonated with me, and the wheels are already spinning for how I'm going to address them. It’s not going to require a major overhaul, but I know the revision will require intense focus. Therefore, I have a new game plan…I’m so close to finishing my first draft of my Mean Boys story and I hate to leave it. So, I’m not. I’m going to focus on Mean Boys, try to finish it in the next two weeks (*fingers crossed*) and then take a necessary breather from it while I work on my TMC revision.

I can do this, I can do this. *breathes*

My goal(s) for this week

I’m on the finale of my Mean Boys story and I should make this week’s goal to write that; however, I am way better with word count goals so I will stick with this one, kicked up a notch so I can get ‘er done! So, here's my goal...

Write 8000 words on my Mean Boys story.

Setting the bar high (for me). Hoo boy.

A favorite line from my story OR a word or phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised

From my boy Ashton, quoting Lord of the Flies: “Maybe there is a beast . . . Maybe it’s only us.”

and a more fun and original one from my girl Meaghan: “I can’t believe you made me pass some sort of guy entrance test to come in here. Especially considering I’ve swapped spit with all three of you.”

The biggest challenge I faced this week (finding time to write, getting sick, having writer’s block, etc)

A want to edit EVERYTHING on first draft. I worked on what I think may be two of my favorite scenes in my story and my inner editor wanted to do nothing more than perfect them.

Something I love about my WIP

I didn’t mean for my Mean Boys WiP to have such an eighties explosion in it, but it does. The theme song is “Jessie’s Girl,” and there are mullet, Miami Vice, Missing Link  and other eighties-themed references. This week I worked on a scene that reminds me so much of this one from The Breakfast Club. Those who know me or who’ve been minions in my classroom know how HUGE this is.

The scene I worked on involves a lot of what’s going on in this one: many admissions—some on-the-surface and fun, some deep and scarring. I am ridiculously in love with this story.

Thank you for being such amazing RSWers! To celebrate, we’re having a month full of giveaways! Yep! One each week for our awesome participants! This week’s writerly care package is from me! Check out the awesome…

  7. Ha. Love that excerpt from Meaghan. Good luck powering through to the end of MEAN BOYS. And also: congrats on the R&R request! That's huge! I think it's smart to focus on finishing MB if you're motivated and your head's in that world. And this gives you more time to mull over revisions for TMC. Good luck with everything! :)

    1. Agreed. I need time to mull over what I'm going to do, so the timing is perfect. And I really want to finish MB. Also, thank you for the encouragement and kind words! Good luck to you too!

  8. Revise and Resubmit, yay! I think you have a solid plan. It is important to revise in the right mindset, and revising while trying to focus on something else is really hard. Good luck this week, Alison!

  9. 80s references = LOVE!

Congrats on the R&R!!! I think the way you're tackling it (finishing Mean Boys first) is the way to go. It'll give you time to mull things over and then jump into the edits. So excited for you!

Have an amazing, productive week. I'm cheering you on!

  10. Good luck with your writing goals this week! It's a good idea to focus on just one project at a time, so you can save the best of your creative energies for the next one.

One of my hiatused WIPs is an Eighties historical, and I can't wait to eventually get back to it.

    1. I am trying to quiet that inner editor, but he actually helped with a scene this week so I can't complain about him too much. And thank you for all the kind words! Have a great week, too!

  12. That's fantastic about the R+R, Alison! Isn't it great when the suggestions made are things you agree with? :-) Lots of luck as you tackle that and get it sent back to the agent. Have a great week! (Though, it would be hard to top the one you had!)

  14. Hoo boy is right! That's an ambitious goal, but you can totally get there! I'm on the same boat with wanting to edit EVERYTHING as I go. It really works for some people! But for me, it just ends up making me lose steam. Since you have such a big word count goal this week, just get those phalanges a-moving and don't worry about editing or revising as you go. Maybe you'll tap into something wonderful and unexpected!

    1. Oh, I learned three projects ago that I can't edit as I go anymore. I end up stuck in the middle FOREVER. I'm a big believer in "If you build it, they will come." I just write and those sticky situations have a way of working themselves out. :)

Thanks for the encouragement! Have a great week!

  15. Woohoo! Congrats on the R&R! That's terrific, Alison! Also, I think it's awesome that you aren't abandoning your other WIP even with this great opportunity showing up. Best of luck working on both projects! You've got a heavy week of writing ahead of you, but I'm sure you can pull it off!

    1. I am so close, Erin. There is NO WAY I could not finish it. And my heart's really with my MB story anyway. I'd be constantly thinking about going back to it as I revise the other one if I didn't finish.

And thank you for the kind words and encouragement! I'm so inspired by your wc of the last few weeks!

  16. Yay, BIG congrats on the R&R! I know how tempting it can be to jump straight into revisions but your plan sounds smart. And the way you're going, you'll have that draft finished in no time :)
