Here’s how last week went for me…

How I did on last week’s goal

My goals for last week were to

1) Write 5000 words on my Mean Boys story. Check! 6000 and wrote two crucial Black Moment scenes.

2) Work on my beginning of TMC at least three days this week. TRY to have it mostly done and in the hands of readers by the end of July. I worked on my THOSE MAGIC CHANGES story three days: drafted, revised, and polished a brand new first chapter (from a different POV). It passed the McKenzie (my 15 year old) test and the CP Extraordinaire Katy test. Most importantly—the new first chapter passed the Alison test. After rewriting and tweaking my first chapter, oh I don’t know, a hundred times, I finally have something I like. So, score.

Bonus—I now have direction. Whereas before I was floundering with three different directions to take my new beginning, now I have one. And I can MOVE ON

My goal(s) for this week

1) Write 5000 words on my Mean Boys story.

2) Last week’s revision goal seemed to work so I’m going with it again: work on my beginning of TMC at least three days this week. I have three chapters left to rework in the beginning and I would love to accomplish at least one of them.

A favorite line from my story OR a word or phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised

Since I spent a great deal of time on both my stories, I’m going to share a line from each.

From my Mean Boys story. Not an exciting line. But it’s an extremely meaningful one from my boy Z: My hang time’s getting a workout tonight.

And my very first line from my new first chapter of THOSE MAGIC CHANGES. This is me trying to make my crass MC Axl more likeable. Feel free to roll your eyes and laugh.

If I hear another song from Grease, I’m going to freaking punch someone.

The biggest challenge I faced this week (finding time to write, getting sick, having writer’s block, etc)

Balance. And writing/reading without feeling guilty for not using that time to spend with my family. The “perks” of being a writer mama.

Something I love about my WIP

Last week I talked about writing a love list for my Mean Boys story. Well, I wrote one. And I thought I’d share a few items from said list that I love, love, love about my WiP. Enjoy…

meaningful tattoos
Urgent Fury
Our House (in the middle of the street)
harmless pranks
stolen, steamy moments
The Missing Link
FIFA
stats explorations (John Green style)
polarizing secrets
vindictive pranks
red cards
second date potential
Crisis
Rico and Sonny
soccer
projects that make you go Hmmm
(and, of course)
Jesse’s girl

Hopefully one day, you’ll get to read this story and figure out what all that means!

Thank you for being such amazing RSWers! To celebrate, we have started a month full of giveaways! Yep! One each week for our awesome participants! This week’s writerly care package is from Katy. Check out the awesome…

  1. Great job this week! The first chapter can be the trickiest to get right, so I'm glad you have something you're happy with! Balance can be tricky, but it sounds like you're doing great!

    1. Thanks! That balance thing has always been a thorn, but I manage. Or at least learn to live with a bit of guilt!

    1. I've made three love lists for three different WiPs and I don't know how I survived without one. Okay, that was a little melodramatic, but still. They remind me of all the things I love about my story and keep me focused on those things I love. Win. WIN!

  8. Congrats on finding an opening you are happy with! That can be so difficult, but like you said, having it gives the whole MS a focus and direction that it maybe didn't have before. So awesome!

I also love your list. That's a great idea, and I might steal it!

  9. I love, love, love your enthusiasm. You and I are at the same point in writing our stories, I think, but while I feel like moving forward is taking all my effort, you are skipping along happily. Can you bottle some of that, please???

  10. I had to go and listen to OUR HOUSE just now :) I forgot how catchy it was.

Sounds like you had some AMAZING writerly breakthroughs! I love the opening line for TMC and yay for direction. Reworking stuff a thousand times is so frustrating, but always worth it when you finally reach that a-ha moment.

Hope you have another awesome week!

    1. My Black Moment (or Dark Moment) is the absolute rock bottom of my story - the one where all hope seems lost,... Anyhoo - mine tend to span a couple scenes and I wrote two of them so...

Hope that answers your question! And thank you for the kind words!

Great voice, and I can see how repeatedly hearing songs from Grease could drive a person nuts lol. ;-) Your WiP's love list has tons of fun stuff on it too! I should really do one for my WiP sometime. Anyway, hope you have an awesomely productive week this week! :D

  25. Love your love list. And I feel you about balancing writing/reading with family time. With my kids off for the summer, I feel like I need to be taking them places or doing things with them all the time but I need to make time for both and not feel guilty either time. (Which doesn't work- I feel guilty for not writing when I'm relaxing with the kids and then guilty for not being with the kids when I'm writing. Oh well.)

  27. Congrats on writing 6K last week and nailing your new beginning! I'm working on my WIP's beginning and I'm still not completely happy with my first chapter. I'll probably have to rewrite parts of it a few more times before I get it right.

Good luck with your goals this week!

  28. A 15 year old test subject, how lucky! The mommy/writer balance is always so difficult. Know that we are out there, and we're going through the same things. We all do the best we can, and that's all we can do.

  29. I always struggle with the first chapter, so I know how hard it is to get right. Congrats on getting your first chapter to a place where you like it. 6,000 is a great number. I love your list of things you love about your wip. I'm definitely curious about what it all has to do with the story.

    Have a good week! :)
