What's Up Wednesday: Playlist Edition

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up. Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk are the hosts, and we'd love for you to join in the fun! Just hit up their blogs and sign up on the linky. J

WHAT I’M READING:

Last week I finished DARK PLACES (Gillian Flynn) for my IRL book club. I was a huge GONE GIRL hater, but I’ve recently read Flynn’s SHARP OBJECTS and thought both that one and DARK PLACES were amazing. The writing in all three books is incredible; the mystery, brilliant. So, why did I hate GONE GIRL so much and really liked the other two? Because DARK PLACES and SHARP OBJECTS had the thing that’s so incredibly important to me when I’m reading—main characters I want to root for. GONE GIRL, not so much.

I also finished the next book in the Origami Yoda series (Princess Labelmaker) and, like the four before it, it was a super fun read. Currently I’m reading IGNITE ME by Taherah Mafi (I also finished UNRAVEL ME last week—exceptional) and I’m beta reading Melanie Stanford’s super awesome magical realism story. I am always amazed and awed by my incredibly smart and talented friends. #luckyCP

WHAT I’M WRITING: I’ve entered a few contests lately and so I’ve spent some time this week tweaking my pitch and my first 250. One version of my query and my first 250 can be found here in the Like a Virgin Contest (which I entered before I entered any other contests—that’s one of the rules J). And this week, I entered EL McKinney’s amazing Pitch Slam. I’m sharing my playlist for that below. J

Oh, and if you get a spare minute, pretty please say some prayers, cross your fingers, send positive vibes for good things to happen from these contests and so forth. Alison would be VERY grateful. J

WHAT INSPIRES ME: Music (yes, I’ve said this in how many WUW posts?!). One of the super cool things about Pitch Slam is that the contest theme is pretty much music. We had to submit a theme song for our story and today we’re sharing our playlists. I’ve kind of billed my story as Freaky Friday meets Grease, the title’s inspired from the Grease song THOSE MAGIC CHANGES, and every chapter title in my story is either a title of a Broadway song or a classic rock song. With 56 chapters and mentions of so many other songs within the story, my novel obviously has a long playlist. But I’ll share 12 chapter titles/playlist music. In fact, I’ll give you the titles and you see if you can match them to the classic rock artist/Broadway show! Enjoy!

The songs...

1) Dude (Looks Like a Lady)

2) Let’s Hear it For the Boy

3) T.E.A.M.

4) Welcome to the Jungle

5) Everybody Wants You

6) You Can’t Stop the Beat

7) Sunday Bloody Sunday

8) Good Girls Don’t

9) The Actress Hasn’t Learned the Lines (You’d Like to Hear)

10) (Ya Got) Trouble

11) There Are Worse Things I Could Do

12) Woke Up With Wood

 The Broadway Shows/Classic Rock Artists

a) Hairspray

b) Evita

c) Footloose

d) The Music Man

e) You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown

f) Grease

g) Guns N Roses

h) ZZ Top

i) The Knack

j) Aerosmith

k) U2

l) Billy Squier

Want some answers?

1) j. 2) c. 3) e. 4) g. 5) l. 6) a. 7) k. 8) i. 9) b. 10) d. 11) f. 12) h.

How’d you do?

1-3  you’re Dazed and Confused (Led Zepplin)

4-6  Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat (Guys and Dolls)

7-9  you’re On the Right Track (Pippin)

10-12 you’re a Jukebox Hero (Foreigner)

I actually have a quiz similar to this at the end of my story. Maybe one day you’ll get to see it. *sigh*

WHAT ELSE I’VE BEEN UP TO: We recently had a pretty rainy Spring Break (did get to the beach ONE day—yay!), but the Easter Bunny brought my kids lots of candy and two super cool movies: FROZEN and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS TWO. I see many movie marathons in my future.

What's Up Wednesday

What's Up Wednesday is a weekly meme geared toward readers and writers, allowing us to touch base with blog friends and let them know what's up. Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk are the hosts, and we'd love for you to join in the fun! Just hit up their blogs and sign up on the linky. J

WHAT I’M READING: I found this on my shelf last week.

I got it for Christmas, was saving it as a reward for finishing my revisions on my most recent story, and then, like a complete idiot, I forgot all about it. It was like finding a twenty dollar bill in an old coat pocket! And the story was SO worth the wait. So, SO good! I also finished beta reading a brilliant science fiction story from an equally brilliant CP of mine. I am always amazed and awed by my incredibly smart and talented friends. #luckyCP

WHAT I’M WRITING: Let’s not go there.

WHAT INSPIRES ME: My friend Elodie. She’s “making her own magic” and self-pubbing her amazing story ONE, TWO, THREE. She did her cover reveal yesterday and it is GORGEOUS. She’s also doing a giveaway as part of said cover reveal. You should totally check it out. J

WHAT ELSE I’VE BEEN UP TO: Lots of proud mama and proud wife moments. My son was selected for his school’s Math Counts Team and my daughter interviewed and was chosen to be on her school’s yearbook staff for next year. And if that wasn’t enough, every year my husband takes his varsity girls soccer team to a tournament in Wilson called The Brittany. The tournament is all about sportsmanship and educating girls on being safe and being aware of potentially dangerous situations. Anyway, one of the teams dropped out at the last minute and the team they were supposed to play no longer had an opponent. My husband, being the good soccer Samaritan he is, rallied his junior varsity girls and got enough to travel on Saturday so the other team could have someone to play. My daughter was one of those girls. And she scored her first career high school goal in that game. The Cards (my husband’s girls) won all their games. And my husband received the Spirit of the Brittany Award. Great soccer weekend all around. J

Cover Reveal for ONE, TWO, THREE!

Today I’m very excited to share in the cover reveal for my friend Elodie Nowodazkij!

When seventeen-year-old Natalya’s dreams of being a ballerina are killed in a car accident along with her father, she must choose: shut down—like her mother—or open up to love.

Last year, Natalya was attending the School of Performing Arts in New York City. Last year, she was well on her way to becoming a professional ballerina. Last year, her father was still alive.

But a car crash changed all that—and Natalya can’t stop blaming herself. Now, she goes to a regular high school in New Jersey; lives with her onetime prima ballerina, now alcoholic mother; and has no hope of a dance career.

At her new school, however, sexy soccer player Antonio sees a brighter future for Natalya, or at least a more pleasant present, and his patient charms eventually draw her out of her shell.

But when upsetting secrets come to light and Tonio’s own problems draw her in, Natalya shuts down again, this time turning to alcohol herself.

Can Natalya learn to trust Antonio before she loses him—and destroys herself?

Guys, I’ve read this story and it is AMAZING. (also this romance whore loves all the super steamy scenes J) I can’t wait for all of you to read about Natalya and Tonio!

And just some awesome facts about the fabulous Elodie…

The short story: Young adult author, Elodie Nowodazkij writes the stories swirling in her head during her commuting time.

The long story: Elodie Nowodazkij was raised in a tiny village in France, where she could always be found a book in hand. At nineteen, she moved to the US, where she learned she’d never lose her French accent. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Modern Language & Linguistics, and later earned master’s degrees in German Cultural Studies and European Studies. Unbeknownst to her professors, she sometimes drafted stories in class. Now she lives in Germany with her husband and their cat (who doesn’t seem to realize he’s not human), and use her commuting time to write the stories swirling in my head. She's also a serial smiley user.

ONE, TWO, THREE is her first novel.

WHAT I’M READING: This past week I finished CHARM AND STRANGE by Stephanie Kuehn (AMAZING), BUTTER by Erin Jade Lange (heartwrenching, but really good), and DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT by Sarah Mylnowski (wasn’t sure why I picked this up, but it turned out to be a very fast, fun, and fabulous read!)

WHAT I’M WRITING: I started the SNI. Okay, granted I only wrote the pitch and part of the first chapter, but I still wrote SOMETHING. And I kind of love what I wrote, so…

WHAT INSPIRES ME: I’ve also started a new playlist for said SNI. It includes this song. And I’ve been listening to it A LOT.

WHAT ELSE I’VE BEEN UP TO: Enjoying the NC warm weather spurt! Which is why I’ve been doing more reading than writing. So nice to curl up with a good book outside. J
